How to play blackjack
Blackjack is a card game between you and the dealer. The aim is to finish with a hand worth more than the dealer's without going over 21.
Card values
- Cards 2 to 10 count as their number.
- Jack, Queen and King count as 10.
- An Ace counts as 11, or as 1 when 11 would take your hand over 21.
A round, step by step
- Pick your chips and press Deal. The bet is placed before any card is shown.
- You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up and one face down.
- Choose to hit, stand, double down or split. Keep going until you stand or bust.
- The dealer turns over the hidden card and draws until reaching 17 or more.
- Hands are compared. A win pays 1 to 1, a blackjack pays 3 to 2 and a tie returns your bet.
Words you will see at the table
- Blackjack
- An Ace with a 10-value card as your first two cards. It beats any other 21.
- Bust
- Going over 21. A busted hand loses straight away.
- Hit
- Take another card.
- Stand
- Keep your hand and end your turn.
- Double
- Double your bet, take exactly one more card, then stand.
- Split
- With a pair, make two hands, each with its own bet equal to the first.
- Insurance
- A side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace. It pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack.
- Push
- You and the dealer finish on the same total. Your bet comes back.
- Soft hand
- A hand with an Ace counted as 11, such as Ace and 6 for soft 17.
- Hard hand
- A hand with no Ace, or with an Ace that has to count as 1.

Blackjack basic strategy chart
Basic strategy is the set of choices that gives the player the best long-run results against each dealer card. The charts below match the Advice button in the game.
- Always split Aces and 8s. Never split 5s or 10s.
- Double on 11 and usually on 10, when the dealer shows a weaker card.
- Stand on hard 17 or higher. Against a dealer 2 to 6, stand from hard 12 or 13 upward, with the exceptions in the chart.
- Skip insurance. Over time it costs more than it pays.
Hard hands
Soft hands
Pairs
The columns show the dealer's face-up card. Strategy lowers the house edge but cannot remove it, and a single hand can still go either way.
Blackjack betting and bankroll tips
Even with play money, good habits make the practice useful.
- Pick a bet size that is a small share of your balance, so a few losing hands do not end your session.
- Progressive systems such as doubling after every loss can look safe for a while and then lose a lot in one run. Practise them here and see how fast the bets grow.
- Decide before you start when you will stop, win or lose.
- Stay calm after a bad hand. Each hand is independent of the one before it.
Blackjack FAQ
Is any real money involved?
No. Every chip in this game is virtual. There are no deposits, no prizes and no withdrawals, and the game is meant purely for fun.
Do I need to download anything or sign up?
No. DeckPlay21 runs in your browser. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Press the play button on the table and start dealing.
Is my balance saved?
Your balance, last bet and stats are stored in your own browser on your device. Clearing your browser data removes them. The Reset balance button restores the starting balance at any time.
What does the Advice button do?
It highlights the basic-strategy move for your current hand and shows its name above the controls. Turn it off when you want to test yourself.
Why are Double or Split greyed out?
Double is only available on your first two cards, and Split only on a pair of equal value. Both also need enough balance to cover a second bet, and you can hold at most four hands.
Can I count cards here?
The game deals from a six-deck shoe and reshuffles it before it runs low. You can still practise keeping a running count, but the table is built for fun practice, not for beating a casino.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On narrow screens the table switches to a tall layout with bigger chips and buttons.
How do I turn the sound off?
Press the Sound button under the table. Your choice is remembered on that device.
